The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered the immediate reactivation of phone lines that were blocked due to issues related to the verification of National Identification Numbers (NINs) linked to Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs).
This directive comes in response to widespread complaints from subscribers who found themselves unable to access their lines over the weekend after telecom providers enforced compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy.
The NIN-SIM linkage initiative was mandated by the Nigerian government in December 2020, aiming to enhance national security and ensure an accurate SIM ownership database.
The policy requires all telecom subscribers to link their SIM cards with their NINs, with the government barring unregistered SIMs and those not linked to valid NINs.
Despite several extensions to the verification deadline, including the latest set for July 31, 2024, many subscribers still have not completed the necessary verification.
In a statement released on Monday, the NCC acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the blocking of lines and emphasized its commitment to prioritizing consumer needs.
The Commission directed all telecom operators to reactivate the lines that had been disconnected due to unverified NINs.
This reactivation is intended to provide subscribers with a temporary reprieve, allowing them sufficient time to complete the NIN-SIM linkage process.
Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, reiterated the importance of the NIN-SIM linkage, stating that it serves to protect users’ identities and supports the development of a robust digital economy in Nigeria.
He urged subscribers who have yet to verify their SIMs to do so promptly to avoid further disruptions in service.
