MTN Subscribers are Complaining About a Sudden Increase in Their Weekly Data Plan, Which Now Offers 6GB for ₦2,500 Instead of 5GB for ₦1,500

MTN subscribers are complaining about a sudden increase in the cost of their weekly data plans which they say is unfair and outrageous. The popular telco raised the price of its monthly data plan from 1,500 (5)GB to 2,500 (6GB) as prices rose by 66.67%. Earlier, MTN had offered to add an extra 1GB data for an additional 1,000, although some users felt the 66.67% increase was unreasonable since the economy remains hit by slowdowns.

It was announced without any prior notice to MTN subscribers but they left the reaction at very stark tom tossing and turning. Some of them took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their anger over the change.

@AOluwatomi60408, for example, wrote: “I do that 5GB for 1,500 till yesterday and I immediately become a financial expert.”

@mogsteady went harder, writing that MTN is a very useless company. The 5Gb weekly plan person dey manage dem don increase the price again. I don borrow 5k airtime. Once e finish I go dumb the sim.”

Students and low-income earners have also complained about the effect the data price hike has had on their budgets, with a user identified as @Grachidex asking MTN to introduce data plans that are affordable to students. MTN has removed its 15GB weekly plan at 2,000 to further create backlash among subscribers who relied on it for large volume data use.

It follows a string of recent increases in the cost of data plans on MTN Nigeria. In February 2025, MTN brought up a series of data bundle prices after receiving approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to charge a maximum 50% increase in fees. Some of these prices are much higher than that limit.

For example, the 15GB weekly plan has come at a price increase of 200% by 2, 000 to 6,000. After this, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) came forward to demand an apology from the carrier. MTN apologized though. It reversed the hike in that particular bundle. However, it continued with some changes which already took place earlier this year.

The company has defended these changes as necessary due to inflation, rising operational costs, and currency devaluation. In a statement shared on social media, MTN explained that the price increases aim to sustain operations and improve service quality. However, many customers remain unconvinced and believe the hikes are exploitative. Complaints about MTN’s weekly data plan increases have flooded social media platforms as users struggle to cope with higher prices amidst Nigeria’s tough economic conditions.

Other complaints are the rapid exhaustion of data despite subscribers not using much. Some customers have complained that their internet data consumes more than they thought they would and it drains very fast. One complainant said he has consumed half his monthly data in six days while only using one app. MTN said that its data consumption is not fixed but depends on how people use your devices and what the data networks are used for. It said all complaints were responded to.

The concerns have continued for several months with many Nigerians considering switching to other network providers or cutting back on the internet in general. People are calling for more transparency in how prices are calculated by network operators like MTN as demand for accountability from customers grows.

For now, MTN subscribers are complaining that the company’s fees for weekly data and other bundles are still “exorbitant”, with many Nigerians now grappling with poverty as a result of the ongoing economic turmoil. It is unlikely that MTN will do much more to resolve customers’ discontent, given that public outrage continues unbroken.
