MoMo Payment Service Bank, or MoMo PSB, the fintech arm of MTN, Nigeria’s biggest mobile network, has teamed up with Thunes, a global platform that specializes in cross-border payments for businesses. This partnership means Nigerians using MoMo can now get money sent from abroad instantly and with ease.
With this new link-up, MoMo’s users in Nigeria, around 2.7 million strong, can receive funds from important countries like the USA, UK, Canada, France, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and South Africa. This is a big step forward for cross-border payments for Nigerians, making it simpler for them to get international money quickly without the usual wait.

The funds can be used right away for daily needs, whether it’s buying airtime, paying bills, sending cash to family or friends, or shopping online. Being part of Thunes’ Direct Global Network means MoMo PSB now taps into a wide system that connects various wallets, neobanks, and financial institutions across more than 130 countries and supports over 80 currencies.

For MoMo PSB, as a key part of Nigeria’s largest mobile network, this partnership enhances their range of digital financial services like payments, insurance, and remittances. It also means millions of Nigerians get safe, scalable, and easy ways to manage money digitally.
Thunes itself is a major player in the cross-border payment scene with a global reach. Their platform links over 7 billion wallets, 15 billion cards, and over 320 payment methods, including big names like GCash, M-Pesa, Airtel, Orange, and WeChat Pay. They support everything from gig economy platforms to fintechs and traditional banks worldwide.
According to data from the World Bank, money sent back to Nigeria grew by 9% in 2024, reaching $20.9 billion, showing how important remittances are for the country’s economy. This partnership between MTN MoMo and Thunes directly strengthens this flow, helping Nigeria’s digital economy grow even faster.
Aik Boon Tan, Chief Network Officer at Thunes, said this partnership unlocks faster, safer, and more convenient ways for Nigerians to receive money from abroad. It opens up access to the global economy and gives people greater control over their finances while expanding the markets that Thunes works with.
Phrase Lubega, CEO of MoMo PSB, says joining the Thunes Direct Global Network supports their promise to push financial inclusion. It means global remittances are now easier to reach for Nigerian users, thanks to Thunes’ strong and transparent network that keeps things reliable and affordable.
So, with MTN MoMo partnership with Thunes to expand cross-border payments, Nigerians now enjoy instant access to global funds, helping them manage day-to-day expenses better while moving Nigeria closer to full participation in the digital financial future.
