MTN Group, the biggest telecom company in Africa, has reported to the public about a cybersecurity breach that affected some of its customers’ information. The company said this happened because someone outside the company got into parts of their system without permission. However, MTN quickly made it clear that their most important systems, like their main network and financial services including MoMo (mobile money), were not affected by this attack.
MTN Group reports this cyber attack happened in some of the countries where they operate, but they did not say exactly which ones. MTN works in 16 countries across Africa and the Middle East, including big places like Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and South Africa. Because MTN is so large and serves millions of people, this news has made many people worried about how safe their personal information really is.

The company said, “Right now, we don’t have any proof that customers’ accounts or wallets were directly affected.” This means that even though some data was accessed, the money and accounts of customers seem to be safe for now.
MTN Group reports that as soon as they found out about the cybersecurity breach, they told the police and other security agencies in the countries involved. In South Africa, special police units that deal with cybercrime have been informed. MTN is also contacting customers who might have been affected, following the laws that protect people’s data.
This incident is a reminder of how important it is for companies like MTN to keep strong security systems. These days, telecom companies don’t just provide phone and internet services, they also handle a lot of personal and financial information. For example, MTN’s mobile money service handled over $204 billion in transactions last year alone. That shows how much trust people put in MTN to keep their data and money safe.
Even though the breach did not reach MTN’s most important systems, it raises questions about how well data is protected across different countries, especially where cybersecurity laws might not be very strong. As Africa’s digital economy grows fast, people need to trust that their information is safe when they use services like MTN.
MTN Group reports they are working hard to find out exactly what happened and to stop it from happening again. They have started a full investigation inside the company and are cooperating with the police and other authorities.

For now, MTN asks customers to be careful and watch out for any strange messages or calls. They suggest using strong passwords, not sharing personal information, and turning on extra security features like two-step verification if possible.
This cybersecurity breach is a warning for all companies and users in Africa’s tech world. It shows how important it is to have strong security, clear rules, and honesty about what happens when problems occur. MTN Group reports that they will keep updating the public as they learn more and work to protect their customers better.
