Kenya’s Sun King has Secured a $40 Million Equity Funding Round

Sun King just locked in a massive $40 million equity funding round. Kenya’s Sun King has secured a $40 million equity funding round, pulling in USD 40 million (that’s about EUR 34.1 million) from Lightrock, a platform focused on sustainable investments. They’re using this cash to roll out even more decentralized energy setups across Africa and Asia, while also pushing forward with fresh product ideas.

If you’re not familiar, Kenya’s Sun King runs a straightforward pay-as-you-go solar network that goes right to customers, households, small businesses, schools, you name it, who either can’t get grid power or deal with constant blackouts. Their lineup is pretty impressive too. On one end, you’ve got super cheap solar kits that handle basics like lighting up a home or charging your phone. On the other, there are these beefy multi-kilowatt solar inverter systems that can run entire big houses, health clinics, farms, or even commercial spots without skipping a beat.

This isn’t some fly-by-night operation either. Kenya’s Sun King has been at it since 2007, headquartered right there in Kenya, and they’ve shipped out a whopping 29 million solar products all over the globe. Along the way, they’ve handed out $1.4 billion in financing to customers across Africa, helping folks get the energy they need without breaking the bank.

Now, with this fresh $40 million in the tank, because Kenya’s Sun King has secured $40 million, they’re gearing up to widen their product range even more. Think tapping into the latest breakthroughs in solar tech, smarter control electronics, and better batteries. It’s all part of their bold plan to hit 3.8 gigawatts of new decentralized solar capacity by 2030. That’s a ton of clean power headed to places that need it most. They’ve teamed up before on financing, like with Diamond Trust Bank.

Sun King’s growth story is straight-up inspiring. Back in 2017, they were delivering around 10,000 solar kits a month. Fast forward to now, and Kenya’s Sun King is cranking out over 330,000 every single month. The CEO and co-founder, Patrick Walsh, put it perfectly: “Sun King has grown from delivering 10,000 solar kits a month in 2017 to more than 330,000 each month today. We are working to expand to one million solar kits each month by 2030 to meet the basic energy needs of, at least, 200 million people, and this investment is part of the overall financing required to reach that operational scale.”

It’s deals like this that show how Kenya’s Sun King isn’t just surviving, they’re thriving and changing lives. In a world where millions still lack reliable power, especially in rural spots across 11 African countries, this funding feels like a game-changer. Kenya’s Sun King has secured a $40 million equity funding round at just the right time, fueling their mission to light up homes, power businesses, and build a brighter future with solar energy that’s affordable and accessible.
