MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola Appointed as Vice President of Francophone Africa

MTN Group has made an important announcement. Karl Toriola, who is currently the CEO of MTN Nigeria, has been appointed as the new Vice President of Francophone Africa. He will start this new role on November 1. This move is part of MTN’s plan to grow its business in French-speaking African countries and to improve the company’s performance in those markets. As the MTN Nigeria CEO taking on this extra job, Karl Toriola will work hard to boost MTN’s presence in countries like Senegal, Cameroon, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Being appointed as Vice President of Francophone Africa means Karl Toriola will have a very big job. He won’t just focus on Nigeria anymore but will also help MTN do better in other French-speaking countries in West and Central Africa. MTN said these leadership changes are important because they want to move faster with their plans and create more value for their customers and shareholders over the next few years.

Karl Toriola has many years of experience in the telecom industry. His career started back in 2000 at Ericsson Nigeria. Three years later, he moved to Econet Nigeria and then became Chief Operations Officer at Vmobile Nigeria, which is now called Airtel. In 2006, he joined MTN Nigeria as Chief Technical Officer. Over time, he took on more responsibilities and even became CEO of MTN Congo Brazzaville and MTN Cameroon in 2011. For five years, he was the Vice President of MTN’s West and Central Africa region before becoming the CEO of MTN Nigeria in 2020. He studied Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria and also earned a Master’s degree in Communication Systems from the University of Wales, Swansea in the UK.

Alongside the news that Karl Toriola was appointed as Vice President of Francophone Africa, MTN also shared some other important leadership changes. Charles Molapisi, who is currently the CEO of MTN South Africa, will step down from that role. He will go back to his earlier position as Group Chief Technology and Information Officer. Molapisi is very strong in network and IT, and now he will help MTN use artificial intelligence (AI) more in its business.

Taking over as CEO of MTN South Africa will be Ferdi Moolman. He helped MTN grow a lot while he was CEO in Nigeria from 2016 to 2021. To focus on his new job in South Africa, Moolman will leave the board of the Nigerian market.

MTN’s CEO Ralph Mupita said that these leadership changes show how much talent the company has. He said the changes will help MTN carry out its plans beyond 2025 and create more value for everyone involved with the company.

There are other updates too. Tsholofelo Molefe, the Group Chief Financial Officer, will now also manage mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Kholekile Ndamase, who used to lead M&A and business development, will now report to Molefe. This new setup will help MTN manage its investments better.

Ebenezer Asante, currently senior vice president of markets, will also take on more work. He will focus on growing MTN’s business in Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, South Sudan, Sudan, Liberia, and some joint ventures in Eswatini and Botswana.

MTN plans to release its interim results on August 18, 2025. The company expects to show strong growth in earnings for the first half of the year, meaning the business is doing well.

As the MTN Nigeria CEO as Vice President of Francophone Africa, he will drive the group’s growth in French-speaking Africa.
