GSMA Unveils Affordable ₦55,000 4G Smartphones for Nigeria and Key African Markets

The GSMA Coalition, known as G6, has announced exciting plans to launch cheap 4G smartphones in Nigeria and five other African countries in 2026. These low-cost devices will cost about ₦55,000, which is around $40. The goal is to make smartphones affordable for more people and help close the digital divide in Africa.

On Tuesday, the GSMA Handset Affordability Coalition signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the G6 group. This group includes big telecom companies like Airtel, Axian Telecom, Ethio Telecom, MTN, Orange, and Vodacom. They are teaming up with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to produce these budget-friendly 4G phones. The plan builds on basic standards for low-cost 4G devices that were first shown at MWC Kigali in 2025.

Africa faces a huge gap in mobile internet use. In 2024, only 38% of Africans were online, compared to 68% worldwide. The GSMA Mobile Economy Africa 2025 report says about 960 million people, 64% of Africa’s population, live in areas with network coverage but stay unconnected. The main problems are the high cost of devices and lack of digital skills.

The G6 believes that selling affordable 4G smartphones on a large scale can bring tens of millions of new users online. This would open doors to better education, banking services, online shopping, AI tools, and healthcare. Vivek Badrinath, Director General at GSMA, said that 3.1 billion people worldwide have mobile coverage but no internet connection. He called low-cost smartphones a “gateway to digital and financial inclusion, economic opportunity, and innovation.”

Badrinath added, “Together with the G6 group of leading African operators, we are sending a clear demand signal to bring low-cost 4G devices to market.” The pilot program will start in Nigeria, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda.

However, there are challenges ahead. Counterpoint Research predicts global smartphone prices will go up in 2026 due to chip shortages. Manufacturers are focusing more on AI data centers, which leaves less supply for phones. Shipments of smartphones worldwide may drop by 2.1% next year. Memory prices could rise another 40% by the second quarter of 2026, pushing manufacturing costs up by 8% to over 15%.

This chip scarcity could make it hard for GSMA to deliver ₦55,000 phones in Africa. To fight back, the group is asking African governments to cut or remove taxes and import duties on basic 4G smartphones. They also want governments to work together to make devices cheaper, even as material and production costs climb.

Badrinath stressed, “In a global context of rising memory costs, governments have an important role in bridging the usage gap. Removing taxes and import duties on entry-level 4G smartphones will be critical to achieving scale.”

On top of this, GSMA is leading an AI Language Models Initiative. It aims to create AI tools that can browse and translate online content, helping overcome language barriers for digital services. This work will be highlighted at MWC26 in Barcelona this year.

This initiative could transform lives across Africa by making internet access easier and cheaper. With support from telecom giants, manufacturers, and governments, more people will soon enjoy the benefits of connected smartphones.
