Elon Musk Launches “Grokipedia,” an AI-generated Encyclopedia Debuting With Over 800,000 Articles, to Challenge Wikipedia

Elon Musk launches Grokipedia to challenge Wikipedia with a fresh new idea. His AI company, xAI, just rolled out Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia that started off with over 800,000 articles. The whole point of Grokipedia is to give people the real, unbiased truth every time they search for something. Elon Musk has said for a while that Wikipedia’s search results sometimes don’t tell the full story or show things fairly.

Elon Musk launched Grokipedia as a direct competitor to Wikipedia. While Wikipedia has nearly 8 million articles made by people, Grokipedia uses artificial intelligence to create its articles. Musk believes Grokipedia will be a big step up because it won’t have the political bias he thinks Wikipedia has. He even called Wikipedia “wokepedia” because he and other critics think it’s controlled by left-wing activists who keep changing information.

Musk told his followers on X (Twitter) that “The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” He admitted it’s not perfect yet, but Grokipedia will get better over time. Musk said the first real version coming in December 2025 will be “10 times better” than what they have now. Even though it’s early days, he thinks Grokipedia is already better than Wikipedia in some ways.

Grokipedia’s website looks pretty simple and a lot like Wikipedia’s. There’s a big search box on the front page, and articles have the usual parts like headings and citations. But right now, Grokipedia still leans a lot on Wikipedia. You’ll see messages on some pages saying the content is “adapted from Wikipedia” under their Creative Commons license. In fact, many Grokipedia articles look almost exactly like Wikipedia’s.

One big difference is that Grokipedia doesn’t let users edit pages like Wikipedia does. Instead, Musk said you can ask Grok, the AI, to add or change articles. Grok will either make the change or explain why it won’t. Musk wants Grokipedia to check facts before showing results so people can trust it. He also said fixing the heavy use of Wikipedia stuff is coming soon.

This launch comes during a big wave of AI tools changing how we find information online. Just last week, OpenAI launched its own AI web browser, competing with Google by making search more AI-driven. They see it as a fresh way to browse the internet and get answers quickly.

Elon Musk launches Grokipedia as part of a new wave of AI tools that could change how we learn and get information. Even if Grokipedia still uses Wikipedia a lot right now, it’s working toward becoming a smart, fair, and trustworthy new encyclopedia. With more updates coming, it could shake up Wikipedia’s long-time spot as the go-to place for knowledge.
