The popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, experienced a global service disruption on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The outage, which lasted for approximately 43 minutes, left users frustrated and unable to access the AI-powered platform.
According to OpenAI’s status page, the issue was caused by a technical glitch that affected all requests to the Assistants API between 8:40 AM and 9:23 AM PDT.
The company’s statement read, “Between 8:40 AM and 9:23 AM PDT, all requests to the Assistants API were failing. Assistants in the OpenAI Playground were also impacted.”
The global outage tracking platform Downdetector reported a surge in user reports, with the outage peaking around 9:45 PM with over 470 reports.
The majority of users, approximately 80%, faced issues with ChatGPT itself, while 17% reported problems with the website.
A smaller percentage, 3%, were impacted by the outage on the app.
X (formerly known as Twitter) users took to the microblogging platform to express their frustration and share their experiences during the outage.
One user humorously wrote, “Everyone Rushing To X To Check If ChatGPT is Down #ChatGPTDown.”
OpenAI acknowledged the outage and provided regular updates on the situation.
At 09:21 PDT, the company stated, “Investigating – We are currently investigating elevated error rates on ChatGPT.”
After resolving the issue, OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT was back online, stating, “This issue is now resolved.”
