Airtel Africa Foundation Launches “Tech For Her” Program To Empower Women

Airtel Africa Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Airtel Africa, launches “Tech For Her.” program to empower women. The initiative seeks to impart technological skills relevant to gainful employment among young women from Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. The program aims to train women with knowledge and requirements to establish a strong foundation for a career in technology.

The “Tech for Her” training is fully online for five weeks, combining hands-on classes with mentoring from mature hands. This helps the women not only in acquiring the necessary new skills but also in getting counseling and motivation for their successful careers. It focuses on three areas: Linux Administration, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics, which are the most important courses in today’s tech world-up to 100+ hours focused learning.

For women who work during the week but wish to take part, “Tech For Her” offers classes over weekends. Those not attending full-time work can participate during the week. Prospective applicants need very basic computer skills but must have a minimum of a National Diploma or equivalent in science, technology, or any related area.

Another interesting thing about the “Tech For Her” program is that it offers more than five weeks of training. The women who complete the course will gain an entire year of ongoing support to help enhance their skills even further. Added to this is the benefit that women who score 90% and above will get internships with Airtel Africa to gain experience and mentorship from industry leaders in technology, fast-tracking their careers.

In the words of Dr Segun Ogunsanya, Chair of Airtel Africa Foundation, the “Tech for Her” initiative is about much more than just training. He affirms that Africa will only consummate its digital growth when there are equal opportunities for women. He shared, “The Tech For Her program is leveling the playing field for women by providing skills, mentorship, and opportunities to the kinds of high-growth tech jobs they can aspire to on a global scale.” He adds that this kind of investment in women’s empowerment will ultimately translate into economic development for Africa in the long run.

The program also intends to target women who would usually fall out of such considerations. Thirty percent of the slots are reserved for women in rural or underserved areas. Another 40 percent of places are to be allocated to women from low-income households. This shows how committed the Airtel Africa Foundation is in bringing “Tech For Her” to women of all kinds.

In a nutshell, Airtel Africa Foundation has launched the “Tech For Her” program aimed at empowering women by providing young women in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia training on Linux Administration, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics. With flexible learning plans and much-accentuated efforts to turn the tide for women from rural and lower-income backgrounds, the “Tech For Her” program shapes a future where women will speak in technology.
