Nigeria’s First Domestic Card AfriGO has Processed Over N70 Billion Worth of Transactions in 2025

Nigeria’s first domestic card, AfriGO, has processed over N70 billion worth of transactions in 2025, showing that many people and businesses are now using it all over the country. Premier Oiwoh, the Managing Director and CEO of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), shared this exciting news. AfriGO is special because it is the only card in the world that gives merchants instant payment every time someone pays with it on a point-of-sale (POS) machine.

AfriGO has processed over N70 billion worth of transactions this year alone, and this proves how much it is growing and becoming part of everyday payments in Nigeria. The card started in 2023 when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and NIBSS came together to make payments easier and faster for both buyers and sellers. AfriGO helps merchants get their money instantly, which is something many other cards do not offer.

One great thing about AfriGO is that it processes all payments inside Nigeria. This means your payment data is kept safe and secure inside the country. It is also a big step for Nigeria to keep control of its money system and protect its people’s information.

Premier Oiwoh also told us that soon, AfriGO will be part of the new national ID card created by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). With this plan, millions of Nigerians will be able to use their ID cards to access financial services easily. The new ID card is not just to prove who you are but also works like a debit or prepaid card. It uses fingerprint checks to make sure payments are safe and secure.

The NIMC card will also connect users to government programs and even allow travel within West African countries under ECOWAS. This shows how AfriGO is playing a big role in making the national ID more useful, not just for identity but for making payments too.

To reach more people, AfriGO is working with popular fintech companies like Moniepoint, Palmpay, OPay, and Flutterwave. These partnerships will help get AfriGO cards in the hands of even more Nigerians. Moniepoint and Palmpay alone plan to give out 10 million AfriGO cards and introduce tap-to-pay technology that makes payments quick and easy.

Tosin Eniolorunda, CEO of Moniepoint, said that the AfriGO card is more than just a card. It is a tool that will help people who usually don’t have access to banks start using formal financial services. This effort fits well with the government’s goal of helping 20% of Nigeria’s unbanked population get into the banking system.

AfriGO will compete with big international card companies like Visa, Mastercard, and Verve in Nigeria’s $22 billion card market. But its instant payment and local processing features give it a special advantage.

Another important development is that AfriGO works with Nigeria’s digital money called the e-Naira. This means people can use AfriGO to safely and easily spend or transfer digital currency. It helps the Central Bank of Nigeria control money flow better and reduces problems with foreign currencies.

The government is also planning to remove transfer fees on the NIBSS Instant Payment platform. This will make it cheaper and easier for Nigerians to make digital payments and reduce cash use. It shows how serious the government is about building a modern and safe payment system.

To sum it up, AfriGO, Nigeria’s first domestic card, has processed over N70 billion worth of transactions in 2025. Thanks to government support and partnerships with fintech companies, it is helping many Nigerians pay and get paid faster and safer. AfriGO is pushing forward financial inclusion and making Nigeria’s digital economy grow every day.
