MTN’s MoMo Rwanda has Recorded 30.2% Revenue Increase in 9 Months

MTN’s MoMo Rwanda has recorded a 30.2% revenue increase over 9 months, showing strong growth in the fintech world. MoMo Rwanda, which is MTN Rwanda’s mobile money service, made Rwf 109.4 billion in revenue from January to September 2025 — that’s a big jump compared to last year.

The boost in revenue comes from MoMo Rwanda gaining more users and merchants. Active MoMo users went up by 12.2% to 5.8 million people, while the number of merchants accepting MoMo payments grew to 578,000 by September.

Chantal Kagame, CEO of Mobile Money Rwanda Ltd, said MoMo is key to this growth, helping connect people with new chances to improve their lives. MTN Rwanda’s total customer base also passed 8 million during this period, with MoMo playing a big role in that success. “Our MoMo user numbers grew by 634,000 to 5.8 million, which shows how much people trust and use this digital service every day,” Kagame said.

MTN’s MoMo Rwanda has recorded 30.2% revenue increase

The revenue increase of 30.2% to Rwf 109.4 billion was mainly powered by new MoMo services like payments, sending money, and lending. These services grew 37% and now make up 28.5% of MoMo’s total revenue.

MoMo’s share in MTN Rwanda’s service income rose to 50.6%, showing how important it is for financial inclusion and helping Rwanda move toward a cashless society. Over the same 9 months, MTN Rwanda’s service revenue rose by 14.2% to Rwf 216.2 billion.

Also, people use MoMo a lot — with average monthly transactions hitting a record 246 million. This shows MoMo is becoming part of daily life for many Rwandans.

“By creating new ways to use MoMo and including everyone, we’re not just making transactions easier — we’re helping transform lives. We want every Rwandan to be ready for the digital future,” Kagame added.

Looking at MTN Rwanda’s whole business during these 9 months, they also saw their mobile subscribers grow by 6.9% to 8.1 million. Active data users grew by 7.5% to 2.5 million, while data revenue jumped 7.9% to Rwf 35.8 billion. This increase was helped by 4G users growing 43.7% to 1.5 million and 4G traffic more than doubling.

MTN is also helping more people get smartphones through a new program called ‘Tunga Taci na MTN,’ started in August 2025. This plan makes it easier and cheaper to buy smartphones by letting users pay in monthly installments.

All of this supports Rwanda’s Vision 2050 goal of creating a digitally strong society where everyone can benefit from technology.
