Morrisons and Google Cloud Launch AI-Product Finder App

Morrisons and Google Cloud have teamed up to launch an exciting new AI-powered tool called the AI-product finder app, designed to improve the shopping experience for Morrisons’ customers. Morrisons, which is one of the UK’s largest supermarkets, serves around ten million shoppers every week across its 500 supermarkets and 1,600 Morrisons Daily stores. Now, through this innovative app feature, shoppers can quickly and easily find the exact location of products inside the stores, making shopping faster and more convenient.

The Morrisons launch AI-product finder app is built using Google Cloud’s latest technology, including powerful AI Gemini models, and systems like BigQuery and Cloud Run. When customers type a product name into the app, the AI quickly understands this query, matching it to Morrisons’ detailed product codes and looking up the item’s location at that particular store. The app then tells the customer the exact aisle and spot where the product can be found — in real time. This is especially helpful during busy shopping days or when the store has rearranged products for special events or seasonal changes.

During the Easter period in 2025, this AI-product finder app was used by shoppers about 50,000 times every day, showing just how useful and popular it has already become. By giving customers quick, accurate information, the app takes some pressure off store staff because shoppers can find items themselves without having to ask for help. Peter Laflin, Morrisons’ Chief Data Officer, said that having all their data organized in BigQuery allowed them to create new solutions like the AI-product finder. He described it as a great example of how Morrisons uses technology to make shopping easier and more efficient for its customers.

Google Cloud’s involvement is also a big factor in the app’s success. Mauren Costello, Vice President for UK, Ireland, and Sub-Saharan Africa at Google Cloud, explained how AI is changing retail. She said supermarkets like Morrisons are putting customers first by embracing these new technologies. According to her, the AI-product finder app removes difficulties from the shopping journey by answering customers’ simple but important question: “Where is this item?” The Gemini AI models act smartly to interpret customer searches, while Google Cloud’s data platform provides fast and reliable product location details. This teamwork of AI and data ensures the app works smoothly and intuitively.

The app’s design even accounts for common problems that customers often face. For example, the AI can understand typos, brand names, or unclear descriptions, helping users find products without needing to explain too much or ask for help inside the store. Morrisons’ director of data pointed out that the most frequent question asked to store staff is about product locations, so this app answers that need perfectly.

Beyond helping customers, this new technology fits into Morrisons’ wider plan to use digital tools to improve how the business works. The supermarket chain has been exploring other AI-driven solutions like robots that check product shelves. The AI-product finder app is a clear sign of a modern grocery shopping experience powered by technology.

This real-time, accurate, and easy-to-use tool benefits millions of weekly customers by saving them time and effort. It also shows how Morrisons is investing in smart technology to keep customers happy and confident while shopping.

This innovative AI-product finder app promises a smoother, more enjoyable shopping experience, and it’s a step forward for supermarkets in the UK as they use artificial intelligence to reshape how we shop every day.
