At least 17 people are feared dead across Nigeria as protests against economic hardship escalated, leading to significant business losses.

The #EndBadGovernance protests broke out on August 1 in different cities, including Abuja, Kano, and Borno as security forces clashed with protesters who were demanding action against increasing living costs and government inefficiency.

Protests Turns Violent

The protests started peacefully but quickly turned into violence.

In Abuja, one protester was shot dead at the Kubwa expressway after clashes erupted following the blockade of the road by demonstrators.

Eyewitnesses claimed that life ammunition was fired by the police, causing panic among people around.

The same was reported in Kano, Jigawa, Niger, and Kaduna States, as several people were reportedly killed when security operatives tried to scatter the huge crowd of protesters.

Economic Impact and Business Losses

Business has been grossly affected, with most shops, banks, and markets closed to avoid confrontation.

Business people in areas affected by the protests count heavy losses as they struggle with the aftermath of protests.

In some regions, commercial activities came to a standstill, further straining the economy already overstretched at the local communities by rising inflation and fuel prices.

17 Dead as Businesses Losses in Protest: Government’s Response

The Minister of State for Youths and Development, Ayodele Olawande, was seen approaching protesters at the Eagles Square in Abuja.

His presence did very little to quench the anger of the protesters.

Protesters shout demands for better governance and economic relief mingled with the sound of gunfire as security forces resorted to tear gas and pepper spray in trying to scatter the crowds.

The minister’s appeal to remain calm was met by protests of “hunger dey,” reflecting deep feelings on the level of food insecurity and economic hardship.

The Broader Context

The protests show widespread dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which has been under attack over its handling of economic policies that have seen fuel prices soaring and living standards rising rapidly.

Protesters are demanding that recent hikes in fuel prices be reversed and immediate reforms to address issues facing the nation, including security concerns and food scarcity.

Among the protesters was a mother who confronted the police while carrying her baby, lamenting her grievances on how hard living in Nigeria had become.

She spoke for so many in the country who feel abandoned by their leadership as the cost of living continues to increase and insecurity worsens.

Conclusion

As the situation unfolds, the protests have claimed at least 17 lives, and many businesses have been left in shambles.

The government’s response and the protesters’ demands will likely shape the future of Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape as the citizens take to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of the country.

The protests show a serious moment for Nigeria as the struggle for better governance and economic stability continues.
